Who we are

Mid-Sussex Mencap was established in 1966. We are affiliated to National Mencap and run by a committee of volunteers who:

  • Work for and promote the well being of people with learning disabilities in Mid-Sussex, their families and carers
  • Provide information to help people with learning disabilities, their families and carers
  • Make links and work with other local Mencap societies and clubs in Sussex, and with national Mencap
  • Work with people in Health, Education and Social Services to assist them in providing the best possible standards of care and support to people with learning disabilities
  • Influence people who have the power to make decisions that affect the lives of people with learning disabilities
  • Actively raise funds to achieve these objectives

How can we help you?

We welcome approaches from anyone with a learning disability, or anyone speaking on their behalf, who needs help and who lives, or has family ties, in Mid-Sussex.

In many cases this will be financial help to buy the sorts of things we have outlined but it can also be to assist with vocational training or travel.

Mid-Sussex Mencap also welcomes requests from other organisations that provide leisure activities for people with learning disabilities in Mid-Sussex.

We may be able to help with the cost of equipment or of putting on events, perhaps hiring particular specialists.

Being flexible means that even if we cannot help directly, we can often suggest other avenues to try. So the short answer to the question 'How can we help you?'.is simply - however we can.

If you have a need, contact us.

What We Do

Mid--Sussex Mencap has, over the past 40 years, helped many people with a learning disability to enjoy a fuller life.

In the last 10 years we have raised a total of £114,000. Grants and donations totalling £73,000 have been given to people and organisations. £35,000 has been spent on our own activities and events.

Money raised also helps people to:

  • Have holidays
  • Furnish their homes
  • Buy personal mobility equipment
Our donations have helped other organisations:
  • Run music and drama clubs
  • Improve their buildings and gardens
Through our own efforts we have organised:
  • Fund raising events
  • Parties and discos
  • Photo, video and art competitions
Also, we are very proud to support Haywards Heath Gateway, a social club for people with a learning disability.
