Adjusting to the knowledge that you or a member of your family has diabetes takes time and it is often helpful to meet other people who live with diabetes and have been through a similar situation.
They can offer understanding, help and support at an important time.
A good way of finding this help is to join a local Diabetes UK voluntary group like the Burgess Hill & District Group, who can offer you local support, and the chance to meet other people who live with diabetes.

We meet on the last Wednesday of each month (unless stated otherwise) in the CVS Community Room above Lloyds Bank (rear entrance) in Burgess Hill at 8pm
You do not need to be a member of Diabetes UK to attend our meetings

3D Project
Diabetes Diagnosis Discussion
The 3D Project brings recently diagnosed people together to talk about the effects of diagnosis on their lives. The 3D Project offers emotional support in the form of group discussions, with partners, for those recently diagnosed.
The 'Diabetes Diagnosis Discussion' is aimed at those people recently diagnosed with diabetes within the last 18 months. It allows them the opportunities, through three facilitated group meetings, held weekly, to discuss the impact that the diagnosis has had upon them and their family with others who are recently diagnosed. It gives them the chance to meet other people with diabetes and be introduced to their local voluntary group.
Group sessions discuss people's feelings and experiences of being diagnosed as a diabetic. They will also talk about the impact that the diagnosis has had upon their lives with others in a similar situation and discover various positive and practical ways of adapting to their new life style.
People receive helpful information and advice to serve them for the rest of their life.

As you are reading this you are most likely that you have diabetes, be it Type 1, insulin dependent or Type 2 controlled by either diet, tablets or a combination of insulin and tablets. You may have had this condition for some time, or you could have just been diagnosed. Whatever the case our group in Burgess Hill is here to offer you understanding, support, help and information, which sadly is not always forthcoming from our health professionals.
Being a person with diabetes is not the end of the world. It's just another turn of the page in your life that you have to learn to live with. It takes a lot of understanding on how to cope with this condition and with that understanding will come responsibility for a change in your lifestyle so that you can control your own blood glucose to the recommended levels, and of course take an interest in the advice from your diabetes team.
Fundraising
The group has a small core of enthusiastic people who, over the years, have raised a lot of money both for Diabetes UK and for local projects.
Each year we run stalls at the Cuckfield Country Fair in the spring, as well as stalls at the Burgess Hill Festival and the St Lawrence Fair in Hurstpierpoint.
We often have a town collection during Diabetes Week and Supermarket collections from time to time.
We occasionally run a Diabetes UK Walk in the Park event in June at Whitemans Green in Cuckfield where people from across the South come together to raise vital funds for Diabetes research.
